Curious about gourmet mushroom cultivation and marketing? Come join us for a seminar and TWO mushroom farm tours this November 11th in Madison. Learn about growing Oyster mushrooms indoors and Shiitake mushrooms outdoors, and how to get the price you need for what you grow, from people who are doing just that. Arrive a little early and wander through the Madison Winter Farm Market opening day the Monona Terrace. You'll find plenty there to please your palate (and maybe find something scrumptious for lunch), and don't forget to look for our featured speaker Matthew Smith in the Blue Valley Gardens booth! At the seminar, join Billy Webb, co-owner of Sheltowee Farm in Lexington, KY, as he takes us on a virtual tour of their business growing mushrooms on pasteurized straw, natural logs and sawdust. Then join Becky Webb as she shares some of the insightful marketing techniques which have enabled them to become primary mushroom suppliers to the Lexington, Louisville and Cincinnati areas. Next, Matthew Smith of Blue Valley Gardens in Blue Mounds, WI, will bring it all home by talking about basic Oyster mushroom cultivation and marketing mushrooms and other home-grown products in the Madison area. Matthew's expertise includes asparagus, heritage poultry and mushroom cultivation.
